"If you fly on a plane, you have a one in 10m chance of being killed. If you go into hospital, you have a one in 300 chance - and not from the illness you went in with".
Sir Richard Branson, newly appointed vice-president of the Patients Association
Having talked to IC nurses, doctors and General and Facilities managers in major hospitals throughout the UK, it has been made abundantly clear to us at Rokenergie, that unrealistic Government targets - to have 82% of available beds occupied, has had "disastrous consequences for the spread of infection".
This has been validated by a review by Dr Archie Clements, from the School of Population Health at the University of Queensland in Australia.
"Drives towards efficiency and cost cutting in the health service were partly to blame for high infection rates......
One study estimated that a quarter of infections in intensive care units could be prevented if there was one staff member for every two patients...
Research has shown that, as their workload increases, nurses and doctors reduce the number of times they wash their hands, which is vital to stopping the spread of infection....
The review also found that as rates of MRSA increased the problem worsened ....leading to highly stressed health care systems with unwelcome side-effects." Scientists estimate that between 15 and 32 per cent of infections could be prevented.
The Daily Telegraph, 24th June, 2008.
"Each MRSA case costs NHS £9,000.....
The cost of keeping patients in hospital to treat them..adds up to more than £45million each year - on top of the costs of the patients' original treatment.
The statistics, published at a conference at the Royal College of Physicians in London..were calculated by Marsh, the financial risk management company......
Almost 5,000 people in England were infected with MRSA over the 12 months to last December. There was a small increase in the number of cases over the last quarter of the year, DESPITE ministers' flagship £50million scheme to "deep clean" every hospital in England."
The Daily Telegraph, June 26th, 2008.
"Superbug deaths (are) at 10,000 a year".
Mark Enright, professor of molecular epidemiology at Imperial College, London.
"Many experts believe the real total for all superbug infections is nearer 300,000."
Sunday Times magazine, 30th March, 2008.
The Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton was shown to have the fourth highest incidence of MRSA deaths between 2002 and 2006.
The Royal United Hospital in Bath had the highest number of deaths from C.difficile in the same period.
Daily Telegraph, 23rd May, 2008.
"UK patients "at near-highest MRSA risk".
British patients are among the most likely in Europe to contract MRSA, a report has said."
Daily Telegraph, 22nd May, 2008.

MRSA IN PETS?
"Wound infections, including post-operative wound infections are the most common manisfestation of MRSA infections in dogs and cats. Other factors include hospitalisation, the use of immunosuppressant drugs and cross-infection from veterinary staff themselves...
Several reports have demonstrated that Staphylococcus aureus infections CAN be transferred from pets to humans ( Simoons-Smit et al 2000, Bradshaw 2003) and these would suggest that humans could acquire MRSA infections from their pets and vice versa."

UK
hospitals are under increasing pressure to ensure
the best possible health conditions for patients and
also for healthcare professionals. This leading
edge scientific spage age solution eliminates all
nosocomial pathogens including MRSA and the pathogens
within the same group,
Norovirus,
the Avian flu virus and most other germs, viruses
and bacteria. Cost effective. Easy to install.
The most effective infection control device for hospitals.
We are proud
to offer these units which are manufactured by Ecoquest
International in the States.
They
are ideally suited to the requirements of modern hospitals
for rapid, flexible and residue-free decontamination
and infection control and can be used in wards, side
rooms, for medical equipment or entire hospitals,
eradicating all nosocomial pathogens. They can
also be utilised as part of a Deep Cleaning program.
Other
benefits:
- Safe to use with all sensitive
electronic equipment including high-dependency intensive
care units
- Proven efficacy against a wide
range of nosocomial pathogens including methicillin-resistant
Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) and
the other viruses within it's "family",
including Clostridium difficile, vancomycin-resistant
enterococci (VRE), Acinetobacter baumannii and
Norovirus ( in the family Caliciviridae, and
also known as SRSV ( Small Round-Structured Viruses).
- Rokenergie can provide a complete
service, including maintenance, cleaning and replacement
negating the need for on-site training or management
of the process. If this is undertaken by a hospital
or Trust then training and supervision can be provided
- this service is carried out by a team of trained
specialist engineers.
- The technology ensures no disruption
to any room, ward or facility. Maximum decontamination
takes 2 hours ( depending on the level of pollution
and/or infection) though no humans should be present.
Normal ongoing operation can be undertaken with
all humans present without any fear of adverse effects
or reactions. All areas can therefore operate
as normal.
- The service is infinitely scaleable
for any room/ward/building/entire hospital can be
protected to the highest standard of infection control.
- Rokenergie can provide finance
or leasing arrangements. Maintenance can also
be provided although the technology requires minimal
maintenance. The units of systems can even
be rented. Trial units are available for evaluation.
- Improve your reporting of success
rates in eradicating nosocomial infections.
Can be fitted to central air conditioning systems
or via individual units in wards or areas with high
risks of infection.
- Rokenergie will look at your individual
hospital needs, draw up a plan, then install, finance
and maintain these systems and/or units ( if you
require financeand/or maintenance).
- Trouble free and a one-stop solution.
The
Technology
The
technology used in our air purifiers is based on research
originally developed by NASA to clean the air in their
spacecraft by removing airborne pathogens. Titanium
dioxide (TI02), a photo catalytic substance, was found
to reduce hydrocarbons in enclosed spaces. The Fresh
Air, the Qube/Ecobox, the Spectrum and the FreshAirToGo
are all units that use a similar application of TI02
in a UVX activated photocatalytic system, to effectively
purify the air indoors. The technology does
NOT include filters,
photocatalytic filters or HEPA filters which apart
from being additionally expensive consumables, also
retain germs, viruses and bacteria which are left
to grow stronger with the risk of mutating. No
other air purifiers have our unique NASA developed
technology which is patented worldwide and is the
only air purification technology in the world which
is accredited by the Space Foundation.
- There is no other competitive product
that has the same technology and continuous infection
control protection that is safe to humans
- Other competitors only provide
a decontamination service which requires the vacating
of the premises whilst the purification is undertaken
The
Product
- the units can be used and installed
either in the central air conditioning and ducting
system or can simply be installed as free-standing
individual units.
- There is a choice of 3 stand-alone
probes for insertion into HVAC systems either new
or existing, covering from 2,000 to 10,000 sq ft. Prices on application and depending
on volumes ordered.
- Smaller stand alone units are
available for individual side rooms, waiting or
consulting room.
- Larger areas are easily accommodated
by installing either more units or more probes.
A
note for NHS and Healthcare purchasing managers
- If you can find a more effective
air purifier in combating MRSA and the germs, viruses
and bacteria that have also been successfully eradicated
( see test results in bottom box) - and
additionally can then help maintain a germ/virus
free atmosphere 24/7- in the same price range, then
return the units and we will refund your money.
- We are also unique in our flexible
range of rental, maintenance and installation options
if required.
Infection
Prevention and Control
- NHS Trusts and other NHS
bodies are now required to fully comply with the
Code's duties in order to provide assurance to the
Healthcare Commission that safe systems and processes
are in place to protect patients, visitors and staff
within NHS organisations.
- Even if you are certain that your
hospital, HC centre or care home is MRSA/ C.diff-free,
would you not want to do your best to ensure it
REMAINS that way and assure your patients and staff
alike that you are doing everything possible in
the most cost effective way?
- And if you have an existing HVAC
system then would you not also want to ensure that
you are eradicating Stachybotrys chartarum (Black
Mould) and slashing your HVAC maintenance costs
at the same time?
Background
and Government pressure
- "Hospital acquired infections
are a global problem. We have made good progress
bringing down infection rates, but we have
to adopt new techniques if we are to go
further." Source: Alan Johnson, Secretary of
State for Health, Tuesday 25th September 2007. In
addition Alan Johnson announced detailed regional
funding for Deep Cleaning in November, 2007 with
allocated funding so that hospitals can implement
the Deep Cleaning programme with the aim of completing
all deep cleans by the end of March 2008.
All 10 regions have been allocated dedicated funding
to support the deep clean. "Infection control
is a complex problem that needs a range of solutions.
There is no single remedy."
January
2008
- Serious outbreak of Norovirus,
causing vomiting and diarrhoea with a fifth of the
country's hospitals wards shut as the winter vomiting
virus strikes both staff and patients. Cases
of the virulent Norovirus are expected to peak at
about 200,000 a week over the next few months.
Norovirus has many strains and can be caught several
times since immunity only lasts for around 14 weeks.
- David Cameron, leader of the Conservative
Party, announced plans to fine hospitals every time
a patient is infected by the MRSA virus during a
visit to Manchester's Trafford General Hospital
on January 2nd, 2008.
More
on the product
- Our products are undoubtedly
the best available, are extremely cost effective
and the most effective in eradicating nosocomial
infections both in the air, but also on walls, surfaces,
ceilings and floors. We have scientific studies
to fully back these claims. Professor Clive
Beggs, head of the Bradford Infection Group, recently
said:
- "Approximately one in 10 patients
pick up an infection during a hospital stay.
While hand washing and other hygiene measures are
vital, evidence suggests that these measures alone
are not always enough...We're washing hands more
than ever before but infections are going up..." Daily Telegraph and Sunday Times October
2007.
- What are the nosocomial infections
that are NOT removed by alcoholic hand rubs?
The two "superbugs" which have recieved
the most publicity over the years due to their levels
of fatalities are MRSA and Clostridium difficile
( C.diff), the latter being the most important cause
of hospital-acquired diarrhoea. Both MRSA
and C. diff belong to the same genus of Gram-positive
bacteria with individual rods which form spores
when faced with adverse conditions. These
spores are NOT removed by alcoholic hand rubs.
- C. diff is usually spread on the
hands of healthcare staff and other people who come
into contact with infected patients or with environmental
surfaces ( eg floors, bedpans, toilets) contaminated
with the bacteria or its spores. The spores
are very hardy and can survive on clothes and environmental
surfaces for long periods.
- Their evolution is most probably
due to the overuse of antibiotics, both in human
and veterinary medicine. Experts are also
concerned that a newe killer " superbug"
is emerging in the UK - PVL Panton-Valentine leukocidin.
The spectre of a virus resistant to ALL antibiotics
may be approaching.
